Doctor Who Challenge Day 13: Favorite Theme Song

This is probably the day I had the most trouble deciding. I mean, I love the original OOO-WEEE-OOOO of the 1963 series. I love some of the standout tracks, the instantly recognizable anthems of Rose’s Theme or the David Tennant theme. But there’s something so striking and so wonderful about Murray Gold’s “I Am The Doctor.” Sometimes I just put it on and close my eyes and suddenly, nothing I do is boring.

Doctor Who Challenge Day 12: Scariest Episode
While “Blink” has its merits, this is the episode that had me up at night, jumping every time a door creaked. I can also pinpoint this as the episode that made me sit back and think, “Yes. I think I am in love with this show.”
Are you my mummy?

Doctor Who Challenge Day 11: Funniest Episode

This one’s a bit of a given, but “The Lodger” is phenomenal. Normally I don’t take to the sillier ones, but the chemistry between Matt Smith and James Corden is phenomenal. At times, I think they play up the clueless Doctor gag (Nine and Ten could identify the century easily), but Matt Smith’s goofiness makes it work.

“I WAS NOT EXPECTING THIS!”

Doctor Who Challenge Day Nine: Favorite Master

While I’m embarrassingly unfamiliar with some of the classic Masters, I think John Simm did an excellent job with the Master’s return from the dead. I’m not such a fan of the original Harold Saxon storyline, but the relationship between the Doctor and the Master is portrayed so poignantly at the end of the fourth series.

Doctor Who Challenge Day Eight: Least Favorite Season
Like I said yesterday, this is a hard call. The third season has some of my absolute favorite episodes (The Shakespeare Code is phenomenal). Overall, however, I thought the Harold Saxon storyline was one of the weaker overall arching themes. Doesn’t diminish some of the brilliant stand-alone episodes, though.

Doctor Who Challenge Day Seven: Favorite Season
This was a tough call. There are awful episodes in each season and wonderful episodes in each, too. If we’re going off sheer vibe, however, the second season will always have such a place in my heart. It had some duds (I refuse to watch Love and Monsters ever again), but it had some really amazing ones. The Girl In The Fireplace is Top 10 of all time, and The Satan Pit still gives me chills. All hail Rose/Ten.

Doctor Who Challenge Day Six: Favorite Special Episode
While not an official special, I do consider this a “special episode” because it was the season and premiere and it was such a monumental event. This is our first introduction to the brilliant Matt Smith, and yes, we fell in love with this young-old mad man with a box.

“So… all of time and space, everything that ever happened or ever will - where do you want to start?”

Doctor Who Challenge Day Five: Favorite Alien
Another brilliant play by Moffat: the most terrifying aliens in the universe, but you can’t remember them when you look away. They’re intelligent, manipulative and scary as hell. That insectile clicking gives me chills. What more do you want from a DW alien?

Doctor Who Challenge Day Four: Favorite Villain
How could anyone possibly say there is a better villain the weeping angel? They don’t have monstrous fangs. They don’t rip your throat out. All they have to do is touch you when you can’t see them. They play on the most basic fear: the fear of the unknown. And that’s what makes them brilliant.

“Don’t blink. Blink and you’re dead. They are fast. Faster than you can believe. Don’t turn your back. Don’t look away. And don’t blink. Good luck.”

Doctor Who Challenge Day Three: Least Favorite Companion

Here’s an unpopular opinion for you. Don’t get me wrong, I like River Song to a certain extent. But the reason the Doctor has companions is so that the viewers can better understand this fantastic, alien man. Their sense of wonder and adoration with his unfailing belief in the beauty of the human race makes the show what it is.

River, on the other hand, has always struck me as a bit selfish. The way she treats the Doctor as if he is hers alone irritates me, and she has this air of entitlement about her. She seems to take the wonderful things of the universe for granted, and that’s not what the show is about.

All the same, she does have her moments. She’s a strong, empowered woman, and she brings out a little of the badass in Eleven, which I love.

Doctor Who Challenge Day Two: Favorite Companion

This one was difficult. There isn’t one companion who makes me think, “That’s it. That’s the best companion he’s ever had.” I love Martha’s complete independence and brilliance. I love Donna’s sass and the pure, nonromantic friendship between the two of them. I love wide-eyed Amy Pond, spunky and courageous and up for anything. I love Sarah Jane, sweet and fearless and so strong, after all those years. I love Jack and his complete transformation from the cowardly con artist to the immortal hero. I love Rory, loyal to the end and definitely badass.

But Rose is my favorite because she does what a companion should do: She makes the Doctor better. He is at his best when he is with her, and they owe each other so much. They were both so lost, spinning without direction, when they found each other. And together, they’re a hell of a team.

Doctor Who Challenge Day One: Favorite Doctor

This one has to be David Tennant as Ten, hands down. I love me some Tom Baker, and over time I’ve fallen so in love with Matt Smith, but Ten to me is the most brilliant incarnation of what the Doctor truly represents. He’s dark and passionate and ridiculous all at once. For me, he is the Doctor.

“I’m the Doctor. I’m a Time Lord. I’m from the planet Gallifrey in the Constellation of Kasterborous. I’m 903 years old and I’m the man who is gonna save your lives and all 6 billion people on the planet below. You got a problem with that?”

I am going to do this. It’s not like I don’t post something Who-related every day. Let the 30 days of Doctor Who commence!
